How to Use the London Underground: Complete Guide

The London Underground (“the Tube”) is the fastest way to get around the city. With 11 lines and 270 stations, it can be intimidating at first, but here’s how to master it.

Tickets & Payment

Use contactless cards, Oyster cards or travelcards. Touch in and out at barriers. Daily caps mean you won’t overpay.

Reading the Map

The Tube map is iconic but schematic. Lines are colour-coded. Interchange stations allow transfers between lines.

Travel Tips

  • Avoid peak times (7–9am, 5–7pm) if possible.
  • Stand on the right of escalators.
  • Check TfL apps for live updates.

Tip: Trains run from around 5am to midnight. Night Tube runs on some lines Fridays and Saturdays.
